Back to Trail Three – Dumfries to Kirkcudbright

Dumfries & Galloway Aviation Museum

Centred around the control tower of the wartime RAF Dumfries, the museum houses a fascinating selection of aircraft, aero engines and personal histories built up over the last 40 years.

From our Battle of Britain veteran Spitfire to a supersonic Lightning fighter, via Assault Gliders and helicopters, there are fascinating aircraft on display to learn about. There are many themed displays, including World War Two Home Front where you can sit in an Anderson Shelter, and RAF Dumfries & the Bomber War with a walk-in Halifax bomber diorama. The centre of the collection is the control tower, which houses a huge collection of aero engines, as well as two floors of fascinating personal histories and photographs, culminating in a recreation of the airfield watch office on the top floor.

There is our new ‘Ginger’ trail for younger visitors to explore the museum, and everyone is welcome aboard our Trident airliner and in the cockpit of our Cold War Canberra Bomber.

Don’t forget to find a few moments to visit our Memorial Garden, then enjoy a cuppa in the shop and choose from our extensive range of souvenirs, models and gifts, or bring a picnic and sit in our grounds and enjoy lunch under the wings of an aircraft. Dumfries & Galloway Aviation Museum is a fascinating place to visit for all the family.
